Volunteer Bike Counts

Thank you for your interest in helping with collecting bicycle data!

The Treasure Valley Cycling Alliance (TVCA) is recruiting volunteers to collect data as part of a semi-annual effort to assess the number of riders in the county. The more data we gather on how cyclists use roads and pathways, the more we can improve the safety and enjoyment of the cycling experience in the Treasure Valley. This effort has already begun to help more than half a dozen other agencies and non-profit organizations guide their decisions around cycling. The data is provided to local planning organizations that then combine it with permanent count locations and other data sources to get a better idea of how bikes get around, and how many people ride.

The 2022 Spring bike count dates are the whole month of May, and volunteers can choose to count bikes during two-hour shifts in the mornings, afternoons, or evenings. The data collection must be consistent to be usable. Volunteers can choose Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Saturday of that week to count but it is important to note when you sign up if a 7 am-9 am or 11 am-1 pm, or 4 pm-6 pm count.

As a volunteer for this project, we ask that you:

  1. Pick a location, day, and shift (7-9 am or 11-1 pm or 4-6 pm - some spots only have one or the other) here: GivePulse

  2. Review the online presentation here: How to Count.

  3. Use this datasheet to collect your bike and pedestrian counts: Count Data Sheet

    1. Extra credit for pedestrians - see the presentation for directions on counting.

  4. Pick a day between May 1st-31st to count at your selected location and time (AM/Noon/PM)

  5. Bring water, sun hat, chair, multiple pencils, something hard to write on, and a smile

  6. Email a scanned tallied results to bikecounts@biketreasurevalley.org
